Call and Response

The Way 49/2 (April 2010), Call and Response

People for whom the concept of religious faith is important commonly think of what they do in terms of ‘vocation’; in the work they undertake, the communities of which they form a part, and perhaps even in the leisure that they enjoy, they see themselves as answering a call from God. Nor is the idea confined to the religious. Others, too, who recognise themselves as motivated by something more than the need to make money, will describe their work as ‘vocational’. Traditionally teaching, nursing and a number of other, often low-paid, professions have been seen in this way. In this issue of The Way a number of authors reflect upon what it means to experience a call and then to try to live life in response to that call.
