Discerning Together

The Way Supplement 85 (Spring 1996), Discerning Together

n the 1970s a tidal wave of literature and process swept religious communities towards more enlightened shores—or so they were led to believe. The surge was created by what proved to be the over-enthusiastic embracing of the phenomenon 'communal discemment'. At that time, most members of the wider Church, with a few exceptions, did not live out their faith in situations where the new ideas for communal discernment could be so easily applied. In this issue of The Way Supplement we have assembled a range of articles which take a measured look at what it means to discern together today. To be effective as a body, the Church needs to engage all the vision and commitment of its different communities. Since Vatican II significant numbers of lay Christians have come to understand their baptismal mission as one of serious Christian witness in the world and responsible membership in the Church; there is a vast pool of energy and commitment to be channelled.
